The Lokahi Room
The Lokahi Room
For children 4–6 years old
In small groups of eight with one lead teacher, children in the Lokahi Room grow their independence and explore their worlds with weekly field trips by city bus and long-term emergent-curriculum investigations. Lokahi Roomers continue to develop their literacy, numeracy, and social/emotional skills as they prepare to launch into kindergarten.
Teacher : Child Ratio
A large room, full of natural light, arranged in learning centers, with a covered lanai. There are ample opportunities for outside play in the school’s large, mostly shaded playground and in the garden and yard areas surrounding the school building.
Emergent curriculum based on the developmental needs of children in the areas of physical, intellectual, social, emotional, creative and language development. Emphasis is on conflict resolution, exploration, hands-on experience, and the building of trusting relationships between children, their peers, and adults. Lokahi Room children take weekly field trips.
The Preschool afternoon is staffed by two full time, qualified ‘Afternoon’ teachers, a teacher from each Lokahi and Sky Room, and teacher assistants. In the Afternoon, children from both Lokahi and Sky Room are combined during free play. Activities are available on the deck and the playground, and children are free to move between these two areas. Children return to their own room for a late afternoon circle and snack, before ending the day with another combined free play on the playground. Afternoon staff lead special activities like gardening, bike day and walking/bus field trips. Field trips are led by an Afternoon teacher and a teaching assistant.
Morning and afternoon snack provided. Families provide lunch and, if necessary, a third snack in the late afternoon. TES has a healthy food policy that discourages candy and non-nutritional snacks. Due to allergies, the school has a strict NO NUTS policy.
